Artistic and Executive Director at Magpie Dance

Avril founded Magpie Dance in 1985, an organisation working with individuals of all ages with learning disabilities through dance.

For over 32 years under her leadership the organisation became a nationally recognised model of good practice, delivering over 350 sessions annually to over 400 people with learning disabilities.  Avril’s career as Artistic and Executive Director (1985 – 2017) enables her to offer insights and learning into the process of developing a highly successful start up, it’s longevity and resilience.

In 2017 Avril received two honours; a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the prestigious National Diversity Awards. She has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts since 2012.

Since stepping down from her full time role at Magpie Dance in 2017, Avril Hitman Consultancy utilises Avril’s varied experience, knowledge and expertise to make a difference in the third sector.   Areas she can help with are leadership, governance, strategic development and working with teams.   Avril employs a range of techniques; for example, mentoring, consulting and advising.
